Description

This wee beastie has been percolating in my head for a few years now. I used the method of overlaying colour on a black and white painting, which took a long time but the results are pretty. Many thanks to :icontempo321: for the stats!

Six feet tall with two snapping mechanical claws, this construct struts on three angular legs. The grasping arms reach far from its body, ready to drag any foes in. At its heart is a globe of absolute blackness, a ball of nothingness two feet in diameter, bracketed by three glowing gems.

A void strutter exists to fulfill one goal at a time, set by its creator or someone designated by her. It waits with absolute patience until activated, then it becomes a terrible instrument of destruction. If its goal becomes unattainable—for example, if it was created to guard a temple that no longer exists—the void strutter loses its enchantment entirely and becomes nothing more than a strange statue until commanded again.

A void strutter is forged to resemble a squat tripod. Until activated, it appears as a large, brass apparatus with a gleaming claws. A non-reflective black orb floats at its center.
This orb is a sphere of annihilation, a hole in the continuity of the multiverse. Anything that touches it is destroyed instantly and utterly. It is suspended between three glowing gems, each powering a Talisman of the Sphere around its base.

Each round, the Void Strutter automatically makes one Control check per crystal, at a +30 bonus, to hold the sphere in place. For each crystal or talisman removed, it loses 10 points of this bonus. The crystals have damage reduction 10 and 5 hit points.

Combat

A void strutter fights primarily with its claws, attempting to drop creatures into its sphere of annihilation. Depending on its orders, it may also attempt to disarm characters of their most dangerous items for annihilation. Should its claws be sundered, it reverts to its slam attack; it cannot make grapple or disarm checks without claws.
If its targets move out of range or take to the air, the void strutter will throw large rocks or similar objects at them. The minus for improvised weapons is already included in its ranged attack bonus. If a grappled adventurer is thrown, he also takes the attack's damage (rolled separately). If the strutter has a second arm free, it will latch onto the ground for additional leverage, grating a +4 circumstance bonus to its throw attack roll.

Annihilate (Sp): Any matter that comes in contact with a void strutter's sphere of annihilation is instantly sucked into the void, gone, and utterly destroyed (no save allowed). Only the direct intervention of a deity can restore an annihilated character. If a void strutter starts its turn grappling a foe, it attempts to hurl it into the sphere. The grappled creature must then make a DC 15 Reflex save or be annihilated.

Magic Immunity (Ex): A void strutter is immune to all spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural effects, except as follows. An electricity effect slows it (as the slow spell) for 3 rounds, with no saving throw. A fire effect breaks any slow effect on the strutter and cures 1 point of damage for each 3 points of damage it would otherwise deal. (For example, a void strutter hit by a fireball cast by a 5th-level wizard gains back 6 hit points if the damage total is 18.) The strutter does not get a saving throw against fire effects.

Treasure: A void strutter controls its sphere of annihilation via three Talismans of the Sphere. These each have a 75% chance each of being destroyed if the strutter's hit points are reduced to 0. The sphere of annihilation is also left behind if the strutter is destroyed. The Void Strutter is almost guaranteed to touch the sphere of annihilation during destruction, with only scraps escaping. As such it has a 10% chance of dropping only minor treasure, in the form of precious metal components and common gemstones used for calibration.
